Balloon Garland vs. Balloon Backdrop: What Should You Actually Order?

July 12, 2026 · 6 min read

'Balloon garland' and 'balloon backdrop' get used as if they mean the same thing — they don't. Ordering the wrong one is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes we see clients make, so here's how a design studio actually thinks about the choice.

What a balloon garland is

A garland is an organic, curved cluster of balloons attached to a hidden frame — usually mounted along the top or side of a doorway, arch, table edge, or cake table. Think 'accent,' not 'wall.'

Standard sizes: 6 ft, 9 ft, and 12 ft. Pricing in the Fort Lauderdale area generally lands between $250 and $700 depending on length, palette complexity, and whether you're adding florals or specialty balloons.

What a balloon backdrop is

A backdrop is a full photo moment — a freestanding wall (typically 8 ft tall by 8 ft wide, or larger) covered in balloons, often paired with a signage panel, neon sign, floral installation, or fringe curtain.

It's the piece guests take photos in front of all night. Backdrops in the Fort Lauderdale area usually range from $650 for a simple round backdrop up to $2,500+ for a designer installation with florals, custom signage, and specialty balloons.

How to decide

Choose a garland when: you already have a great venue wall, you want to accent an entrance or bar, or your budget is under $500 for decor.

Choose a backdrop when: you want a dedicated photo moment, you're doing branded content or a milestone birthday, or your venue has bland walls you need to hide.

Choose both when: it's a wedding, a Sweet 16, or a corporate launch — one for the entrance, one for the photo op.

Questions to ask any balloon vendor

Do you use double-stuffed balloons? (They hold color better outdoors in Florida heat.)

Is setup and breakdown included in the price?

How long will the installation last outdoors in direct sun? (Ask for a written window.)

Do you carry insurance? Most quality venues require a certificate of insurance from your decor team.
